Ep.19: A Weekend Rant About Weekends

Why Your Suffering is Justified (But not that justified)

CAPTION: The happiness doesn't last.

There is no right way to rest, but many wrong ways. After writing the previous rant and experiencing a slow, dull weekend, I found the inspiration to jot down some more ideas (boredom sure can be useful) about how we rest.

Every student always longs for Friday's end, and for Saturday to appear like some magical cure for everything. But this can be unhealthy, piling on more problems for our "working" lives resume. I hate that I love to sleep later on weekends for this reason; when school days resume I find myself unable to fall asleep yet more tired. Another example is homework, notoriously easy to avoid with the excuse of "But it's the weekend, I should have fun" which does nothing but highlight the way our minds move in circles, as on the weekdays, I put off homework until the weekend.

Life won't run on a perfect seven day week no matter how much we try to fit it in there, and alternatives are only different problems. There's the idea of staggering rest days, so you're always within three days of a weekend. This could stop mid-week burnout, but going on a "weekend" outing is much less fun when the next day is a work day again. You would literally be surrounded by work in your past and present. Or, more drastically, the weekend could be lengthened to three days. But would this make us really enjoy weekends more? Note that, for a long time (and still in some places of the world) one-day weekends were common. Did people who switched from the one day weekend to the two day weekend feel better? So why do we complain so much nowadays?

We promise ourselves that the future will do something, that it's okay to do nothing for now, putting the calendar in control. But we live in the future, constantly moving forward in time. There is no escape.

Anyways, that was my quick and underwhelming rant about breaks! Unfortunately I procrastinated way too much on this (see the procrastination rant for more stuff about that) which is why it's a week behind and so short. Hope you enjoyed?
