Episode 3: Do Something Good - Freerice!

Intro

This week's blog is a shorter one, to due to my unproductivity (according to Google spellcheck, that is not a word, but whatever) last week. I also hope that "Do Something Good" becomes a recurring episode theme, where I share things that might just make the world a tiny bit better. Disclaimer: I am not completely sure of how these charities work, so if my information proves misleading I am not liable :) Now, about Freerice: Freerice is a website affiliated with the United Nations where you can answer questions for charity. I find it super fun to do, as I will explain below! Also, below is the link to Freerice.

How Freerice Works

When you click into the Freerice Website, you are immediately given an option to play the game, which starts out on a random category, on the easiest level. You are given multiple-choice questions that progress in difficulty levels if you are consistently getting the correct answer. For every correct answer you choose, ten grains of rice are donated to the World Food Programme by an affiliated sponsor. Note that, according to the Freerice Website, the ten grains of rice is just a way to visualise the donation you are making, and the charity purchases more than just rice (perhaps this was obvious, but sometimes it's better to be very clear on things). The donations are flexible, and used where and when they are needed. The Freerice question categories vary widely, from movies to calculating derivatives, so you are certain to find something will enjoy doing. One of my personal favourites is the "root words" category, because it teaches me intuitive parts of English that I didn't even realise existed. A final cool thing I want to share is that you can create groups in Freerice, so if you and your friends all get Freerice accounts you can see how much "rice" you have donated altogether.

Conclusion

So far, I have donated about 3,000 grains of rice, which is about 30 bowls of rice according to the Freerice Website. I like how I can have fun answering questions and also do good in the world, even if it's minimal. I highly recommend you to try this website, where over 224 billion rice grains of rice has already been donated. Why not try and answer a question and join them? It might just be something fun. Thanks for reading!
